Hangzhou Gear launches the first electromechanical integrated marine hybrid gearbox system

Dec 2, 2024 | Industry Company Dynamics | 0 comments

Marine gearboxes are core components of ship propulsion systems, and their stable operation is directly related to the safety and economy of ships. However, due to the complex marine environment and long-term loads, gearboxes often experience various faults. This article will introduce how to diagnose common faults through condition monitoring, and provide specific troubleshooting methods and preventive measures to help improve the operating reliability and service life of gearboxes.

Hybrid Powertrains Enter the Market

Hangzhou Advance Gearbox Group Co., Ltd. recently officially launched the first mechatronic marine hybrid gearbox system, which has attracted wide attention from the shipbuilding and shipping industries. This innovative product combines efficient gearboxes with electric drive technology, opens up a new path for ship power transmission, and provides the industry with an efficient, energy-saving and reliable power solution.

Three Energy-Saving Modes to Meet Diverse Needs

The hybrid gearbox system consists of an enhanced gearbox, PTI/PTO high-efficiency motor and hybrid control cabinet, supporting three core working modes:

  • Power output mode (PTO, shaft-driven power generation) The main engine drives the integrated motor through the gearbox, and the motor is in the power generation state, supplying power to the ship or charging the battery pack. This mode is suitable for navigation scenarios with large residual power of the main engine, and can generate electricity efficiently at different speeds to improve energy utilization.
  • Power input mode (PTI, hybrid power) The motor obtains energy from the ship’s power grid to provide additional power for the propulsion system. This mode can flexibly allocate the power distribution of the main engine and the motor according to the speed requirements, improve the maneuverability of the ship, especially when running at high loads, it can provide an additional 10%-15% thrust support and achieve the “zero emission” goal.
  • Power return mode (PTH, pure electric propulsion) The motor drives the propeller alone to provide propulsion for the ship. This mode can not only ensure basic navigation when the main engine fails, but also avoid inefficient operation of the main engine in scenarios with low power requirements (such as inland ships sailing downstream), thereby greatly improving economic efficiency.

Efficient, Intelligent and Reliable

Senior experts from Hangchi pointed out that this mechatronic hybrid gearbox system takes the high-efficiency permanent magnet motor as the core and combines it with an innovative gearbox structure to fully optimize the efficiency and reliability of ship power transmission. Compared with traditional power systems, the new system has the following advantages:

  1. Energy efficiency optimization The traditional “main engine + ordinary gearbox” mode has high fuel consumption and limited operating efficiency due to the low load rate of the main engine. The new system maximizes the energy efficiency of the main engine through electromechanical hybrid drive and intelligent management.
  2. Energy saving and emission reduction After applying the new technical route, the fuel consumption of a single ship voyage can be reduced by 15%-30%, and environmental pollution can be effectively reduced under the condition of adapting to the zero-emission mode.
  3. Intelligent monitoring The system is equipped with a variety of sensors and 5G remote monitoring technology, which can detect the status of the gearbox and hybrid power equipment in real time, optimize the power dispatch through EMS (energy management system), and dynamically adjust the power distribution through PMS (power management system), thereby improving the convenience of operation and system safety.

Market Significance and Development Potential

At present, the reliability and energy saving of ship power systems are becoming the focus of shipowners. Although the traditional power mode is mature in technology, it has obvious shortcomings in responding to environmental protection and energy efficiency needs. The hybrid power system of Hangchi not only makes up for this shortcoming, but also provides technical support for the intelligent development of ships.

In addition, the system draws on the on-board oil-electric hybrid technology, combines the actual operation needs of ships, and sets a new benchmark for the industry through patented technology and integrated design. Whether it is the power matching of new ships or the system transformation of existing operating ships, it can significantly improve economic and environmental benefits.

Hangchi’s innovative products represent the latest development direction of domestic marine transmission technology. As experts say, the “efficient, intelligent and reliable” mechatronic hybrid gearbox system may lead the new future of the marine transmission field and inject strong impetus into the development of the industry.
